About Verona Shi

Verona Shi (b. 2000, China) is a ceramic artist based between London and Hong Kong. She approaches ceramics as her language, using clay to explore questions of time, human existence, and social identity. While her research remains rooted in the human condition, her work seeks not to offer autobiographical narratives, but to propose new perspectives through which we might understand ourselves and the world we inhabit.

Throughout her practice, Verona conceives of ceramics as a form of living drawing. Her earlier works expressed these ideas through richly textured surfaces, layered glazes, and intricate material detail, while her recent sculptures have evolved towards a more restrained visual language. Employing simplified lines, reduced forms, and carefully considered spatial relationships, she creates contemplative works that investigate the rhythms, tensions, and systems shaping contemporary life. This evolution reflects not a shift in subject matter, but in the visual language through which her ideas are communicated.

 

Drawing on Eastern philosophies and aesthetic traditions, Verona embraces reduction, balance, and the expressive potential of emptiness. Rather than referencing traditional visual motifs, she reinterprets these principles through contemporary ceramic sculpture, exploring how a modern Eastern sensibility can offer alternative ways of seeing, experiencing, and understanding the human condition.

 

Verona graduated with a BA in Ceramic Design from Central Saint Martins in 2024 and an MA in Ceramics & Glass from the Royal College of Art in 2026. In 2025, she presented her debut solo exhibition, Nature's Metronome, in collaboration with Hands-On. Her work has since been exhibited in The Invisible Made Visible during London Craft Week (2026), Archaeology of the Everyday at Galeries Pour Vous (2026), the Royal College of Art Graduate Exhibition (2026), the RCA SustainLAB Annual Exhibition (2026), the Swanfall Art Annual Exhibition (2025), and The First Origin ZZY Art Design Exhibition (2025). She was shortlisted for the 2024 Global Creative Graduate Showcase.
